Promotional materials can be anything from leaflets and posters to playing cards and calendars! It all depends on what you are trying to say and then finding the best way to get that message across.
Whether you want to promote your brand or a big event there is promotional material that will do it best for you. If you were promoting a product sale for instance, it is likely to be a time sensitive event and you will want to let as many people know as possible, quickly and cheaply, therefore it would be best to have a large quantity of flyers to hand out.
